Angelfish (Tricolor)

A freshwater angelfish, commonly known simply as an angelfish, is a popular species of Freshwater fish in Bacolod city and often kept in home aquariums. Here are some key points about them:

  1. Scientific Name: The scientific name for the freshwater angelfish is Pterophyllum scalare. There are other species within the genus Pterophyllum, but P. scalare is the most common in the aquarium trade.
  2. Natural Habitat: They originate from the slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and swamps of the Amazon Basin in South America. Their natural environment is characterized by warm, soft, and slightly acidic water.
  3. Appearance: Angelfish are known for their distinctive, laterally compressed bodies, long triangular dorsal and anal fins, and flowing, elegant appearance. They can come in a variety of colors and patterns, including silver, black, gold, marble, and koi.
  4. Size: They typically grow to about 6 inches (15 cm) in length and can be up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall, including their fins.
  5. Behavior: Angelfish are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with other non-aggressive fish of similar size.
  6. Diet: In the wild, angelfish are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, plants, and detritus. In captivity, they do well on a diet of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
  7. Breeding: Angelfish form monogamous pairs and are known to be good parents. They will clean a flat surface on which the female will lay her eggs, and both parents will guard and care for the eggs and fry.
  8. Aquarium Requirements: They require a well-maintained aquarium with stable water conditions. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a small group, with plenty of vertical space due to their height. The water should be kept at a temperature between 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a pH around 6.8 to 7.8.

Freshwater angelfish are a popular choice for aquarists due to their beauty and relatively easy care requirements, making them a staple in the hobby.
