The Negro Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is one of the true unsung heroes of the freshwater hobby. While it shares a similar sleek profile with its famous cousins, the standard Neon and Cardinal Tetras, the Black Neon belongs to an entirely different genus and is highly celebrated for its robust constitution. They feature a stunning contrast: a jet-black lower stripe running horizontally from gills to tail, paired with an iridescent, glowing enamel-white or lime-green upper stripe that beautifully reflects aquarium lighting. To top it off, they sport a bright crimson “eyebrow” that adds a wonderful pop of warm color.

To truly make their enamel-white stripes and jet-black bodies pop, house them in a natural-style aquarium filled with live plants (like Java Fern or Amazon Swords) and a dark gravel background. They are enthusiastic surface and midwater feeders that will happily gobble up premium micro-flakes, nano pellets, and freeze-dried bloodworms.
