Quick Overview The Silvertip Tetra (Hasemania nana), native to the blackwater and clearwater streams of Brazil, is a classic favorite celebrated for its rugged hardiness and tireless energy. They get their name from the brilliant, contrasting silver-white tips that decorate their dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Under proper lighting, their bodies display a beautiful warmth—dominant males fire up into a deep, metallic copper-amber, while females showcase a softer, elegant silver-gold hue. Interestingly, they are one of the few tetra species that naturally lacks a tiny adipose fin (the small fin between the dorsal and tail fin), giving them an exceptionally sleek profile.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Beginner (One of the absolute toughest and most forgiving nano fish available)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 15 to 20 Gallons (Because they are incredibly fast, hyper-active swimmers, they need ample horizontal swimming space; must be kept in schools of 6 or more)

  • Water Temperature: 22°C to 28°C (Perfectly adapted to our standard tropical climate parameters)

  • Temperament: Peaceful but highly energetic (They are safe for community aquariums, but their playful, fast-paced nature means they should be paired with other confident, quick tank mates)

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Silvertip Tetras are incredibly fun to watch because they are constantly playing and interacting with each other. However, if kept in a school that is too small (fewer than 6 fish), their playful energy can turn into minor fin-nipping behavior out of boredom or stress. To ensure they remain perfectly well-behaved community citizens here in Bacolod, always purchase them in a proper group of 6 to 10 minimum.

To make their rich copper coloration and silver tips truly stand out, house them against a dark background with lush green live plants like Vallisneria or Amazon Swords. They are enthusiastic surface and midwater feeders that will greedily accept premium micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and freeze-dried daphnia.

Stop by our Bacolod pet shop today to pick up premium high-protein tropical fish feeds, active filtration systems, and a lively, healthy school of Silvertip Tetras!
