Quick Overview of the Mythical Rayquaza Medaka

The Japanese Ricefish (Oryzias latipes), or Medaka, has been selectively bred in Japan for centuries, but the Rayquaza Medaka represents the absolute pinnacle of modern line-breeding. Named after the iconic emerald sky dragon, this elite variety features a deep, dark underlying pigmentation heavily overlaid with brilliant, highly reflective lamé (glittering) scales. When viewed under natural sunlight, their scales ripple with an intense metallic green, gold, and deep bronze sheen that beautifully mimics dragon scales. Growing to a maximum size of 1.5 inches, they are incredibly active surface-dwellers that exude elegance and high-end prestige.

Tank Requirements for Your Rayquaza Medaka Setup

  • Care Level: Beginner (Arguably the most resilient and bulletproof nano fish in the world)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 5 to 10 Gallons (Thrives wonderfully in small colonies, patio bowls, or glass desktop tanks)

  • Water Temperature: 5°C to 30°C (Extremely temperature-tolerant; thrives effortlessly without a heater in our tropical Bacolod climate)

  • Temperament: Peaceful and Docile (An absolute model citizen that pairs perfectly with Neocaridina dwarf shrimp, snails, and other micro-fish)

Local Care Tips for Your Rayquaza Medaka Colony

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Medaka have been historically bred in Japan to be appreciated from a top-down perspective. While they look beautiful in a standard glass aquarium, their true “Rayquaza dragon scales” look absolutely jaw-dropping when kept in dark-colored containers, ceramic pots, or outdoor mini-ponds on a porch or patio!

Because they are incredibly tough, they can handle the natural summer heatwaves of Bacolod with ease, provided they are kept under partial shade. They are also famous for being excellent natural mosquito control, greedily hunting down any mosquito larvae that try to settle in your patio water features.

As livebearers’ egg-laying equivalents, Medaka are exceptionally easy to breed! Females will carry a cluster of eggs trailing from their bellies every morning, which they will eventually brush off onto floating plants like Water Hyacinth roots or specialized Medaka spawning mops. They are enthusiastic surface feeders that love premium powdered foods, floating micro-pellets, and live baby brine shrimp.

Drop by our Bacolod pet shop today to pick up premium dark spawning containers, specialized Medaka micro-diets, spawning mops, and a magnificent, healthy breeding group of rare Rayquaza Medaka!
