Quick Overview The Taisho Sanshoku Koi—frequently referred to simply as the Taisho Sanke—is an absolute cornerstone of the Japanese koi breeding world. Alongside Kohaku and Showa, it comprises the elite Gosanke group. The Sanke is a tri-colored beauty defined by a flawless, milky-white body (shiroji) topped with large, intense orange-red patches (hi) and accented by sharp, distinct spots of solid black (sumi) that do not extend down past the lateral line or onto the face. Growing to majestic proportions, they are highly sought after by collectors for their striking contrast and elegant swimming grace.

Pond Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Intermediate (Requires stable water parameters and large volumes of water)

  • Minimum Volume: 1,000 Gallons (Pond depth should ideally be at least 3 to 4 feet to allow proper development and protection from predators)

  • Water Temperature: 15°C to 25°C (Highly adaptable and handles outdoor tropical temperatures excellently, provided there is adequate shade)

  • Temperament: Peaceful and highly social (Thrives when kept with other varieties of Koi or large pond fish)

  • Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: In our bright, sunny Bacolod weather, outdoor koi ponds receive massive amounts of UV radiation. While this helps with growth, intense direct sunlight can sometimes cause the vibrant red (hi) markings on a Sanke to fade or become yellowish if their diet is poor. To keep their colors sharp, deep, and competition-ready, we highly recommend feeding them premium spirulina-infused and color-enhancing sinking or floating sticks.

Furthermore, because large koi produce a significant amount of waste, heavy-duty mechanical and biological filtration alongside an active UV clarifier is necessary to keep your pond water crystal clear. Stop by our shop today to browse our premium pond filtration media, color-boosting feeds, and a stunning selection of healthy, locally acclimated Taisho Sanshoku Koi!
