Quick Overview The Scarlet Badis (Dario dario) is a highly prized ultra-nano fish native to the pristine, slow-flowing streams of India. Despite their tiny size, they behave like miniature cichlids, bursting with curiosity and distinct personalities. Dominant males display a jaw-dropping coloration consisting of fiery scarlet-red vertical bars contrasted against shimmering, metallic blue-silver scales and fins. Because they are incredibly docile and small, they are an absolute favorite for nano tanks and high-end aquascapes.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Intermediate (Due to specific dietary preferences)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 5 Gallons for a single male; 10+ Gallons if keeping a harem or multiple males

  • Water Temperature: 18°C to 26°C (Prefers slightly cooler to moderate tropical temperatures)

  • Temperament: Peaceful but territorial among their own kind (Males will squabble over territory, so plenty of visual barriers are necessary)

  • Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Scarlet Badis are notorious micro-predators and will almost always refuse standard dry flakes or pellets. To ensure they thrive here in Bacolod, you should be prepared to feed them live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp (BBS), daphnia, or micro-worms. They are also incredibly shy and can easily be outcompeted for food by fast-swimming tank mates. Keep them in a heavily planted tank with lots of Java Moss, driftwood caves, and dense stem plants where they can hunt for micro-fauna and claim small territories. Stop by our shop to check out our live culture supplies, dense aquatic mosses, and healthy Scarlet Badis!
