Quick Overview of the Green Axelrodi Rasbora

The Green Axelrodi Rasbora (Sundadanio axelrodi “Green”), also known as Axelrod’s Rasbora, is one of the most stunning and highly prized micro-cyprinids in the aquascaping world. Native to the pristine, heavily shaded, tannin-rich blackwater peat swamps and forest streams of Borneo and Sumatra, Indonesia, this miniature marvel reaches an ultra-compact adult size of just 0.6 to 0.8 inches (1.5 to 2 cm). It is universally celebrated for its rare color profile: a light-reflecting, iridescent emerald-green to neon-cyan dorsal stripe that glows under aquarium lighting, contrasted by a deep midnight-blue to black blotch on its lower abdomen. Dominant males showcase intense metallic reflections and high-contrast red-tipped fins during peaceful courting displays.

Tank/Plant Profiles & Environmental Requirements

  • Care Level: Moderate (Thrives best in mature, well-established, stable nano aquariums)

  • Growth Rate / Activity: Moderate Growth; Active, Coordinated Micro-Schooling Swimmers

  • Lighting: Low to Moderate (Subdued or dappled lighting makes their metallic green stripe and blue reflections flash vividly)

  • Temperature: 23°C – 28°C (Loves warm, stable tropical water)

  • Tank Placement: Mid-Water Column Swimmers & Open Pocket Explorers

  • Minimum Tank Size: 5–10 Gallons (Must be kept in a group of 8 to 12+ minimum to build confidence and encourage tight schooling)

Local Care Tips for Bacolod Aquarists

Bacolod Water Conditioning & Blackwater Tannin Synergy: Sundadanio axelrodi naturally originates from soft, highly acidic blackwater habitats. While tank-acclimated stock is adaptable, conditioning your water unlocks their richest emerald coloration and maintains strong immune health. Because Bacolod’s tap water naturally leans neutral to moderately hard, aging your water with local Talisay (Indian Almond) leaves or natural driftwood is strongly recommended. The gentle humic acids and soft golden tannins released will safely buffer parameters, protect their delicate slime coats, and recreate their cozy native home.

Nano Aquascaping & High-Contrast Plant Layout: To make the glowing green stripe of Axelrodi Rasboras jump out, set up your aquarium with dark backgrounds and dark aqua-soils. They look breathtaking school-gliding over lush, manicured carpets of Monte Carlo or Dwarf Hairgrass. Frame the background and midground with dense stem plants or shade-loving epiphytes like Anubias Nano, Java Ferns, or Bucephalandra bound to local driftwood. Always make sure the rhizomes of these epiphytes remain completely clear of your substrate to keep them from rotting! Add floating plants like Amazon Frogbit to diffuse top light.

Micro-Dietary Care & 100% Peaceful Community Etiquette: Due to their extra-small, upturned mouths, Green Axelrodi Rasboras require tiny, micro-sized foods. Offer finely powdered dry foods, crushed high-grade flakes, spirulina powder, and regular treats of live or frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or micro-worms. They are among the most gentle, harmless fish in the world and are 100% safe to house alongside prized dwarf Caridina/Neocaridina shrimp and shrimplets. Always maintain a secure, tight-fitting lid or mesh cover on your tank, as sudden room light transitions or room activity can startle micro fish into leaping.
