Quick Overview
The Penguin Tetra (Thayeria boehlkei) is an elegant and highly entertaining freshwater fish native to the Amazon Basin. Instantly recognizable by the bold black stripe that runs down the lower half of their tail, these fish are famous for their unique, oblique “head-up, tail-down” swimming posture. As an active mid-to-top water swimmer, they look absolutely fantastic when kept in large schools, providing beautiful contrast to more colorful tank mates.

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Penguin Tetras naturally come from the shaded jungle streams of South America, so they thrive in aquariums that are not overly bright. Since Bacolod’s tap water parameters work well for them, your main focus should be on their environment! Adding floating aquatic plants, along with locally foraged and dried Talisay (Indian Almond) leaves, will give them the slightly tinted water and dim lighting they love.
