Quick Overview The Rainbow Shiner (Notropis chrosomus) is an absolute showstopper native to the clear, fast-moving streams of the Southeastern United States. While they normally sport a beautiful translucent pinkish-silver body with a gold stripe, they undergo a jaw-dropping transformation when they mature and prepare to spawn. The males “fire up,” turning an intense neon purple and pink, with a brilliant metallic blue stripe shining down their sides. They are incredibly energetic and spend their days constantly darting against the water current.
Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips
-
Care Level: Intermediate (Due to temperature and water flow requirements)
-
Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons (Must be kept in schools of 6 or more; requires a “long” tank for horizontal swimming space)
-
Water Temperature: 15°C to 24°C (Strict cold-water/temperate requirement)
-
Temperament: Peaceful but highly active (Excellent with White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Hillstream Loaches, and other cool-water river species)
-
Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Because Rainbow Shiners are a temperate species, they absolutely do not need a heater. In fact, the main challenge in Bacolod’s tropical climate is keeping the water cool! We highly recommend keeping their tank in an air-conditioned room or using surface cooling fans. Furthermore, they need highly oxygenated water to thrive. You can easily replicate their natural stream environment by adding a strong powerhead or wavemaker to your tank.
