Quick Overview The Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox), also widely known as the Praecox Rainbowfish, is native to the lush, sun-dappled river systems of West Papua. While standard rainbowfish grow much too large for standard home aquariums, this unique dwarf variety reaches a highly compact maximum size of just 2 to 2.5 inches. They feature a deep, diamond-shaped profile coated in brilliant, hyper-reflective scales that catch the light, radiating a gorgeous neon-blue sheen. What makes them an absolute standout is the beautiful color contrast on their fins: mature males boast fiery crimson-red edges, while females display elegant, bright yellow accents.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Beginner to Intermediate (Remarkably rugged and adaptable once settled)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons (Because they are exceptionally fast, high-energy horizontal swimmers, they need open room to race and must be kept in schools of 6 or more)

  • Water Temperature: 23°C to 28°C (Perfectly matched to our local tropical Bacolod climate)

  • Temperament: Highly Peaceful and Community-Friendly (An excellent tank mate for Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, Platies, and peaceful dwarf cichlids)

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: If you want to see the jaw-dropping “neon glow” that gives these fish their name, you need to pay attention to your male-to-female ratio. We highly recommend keeping 1 male for every 2 females.

When kept in a properly balanced school, the males will enter a state of friendly competition. Every morning under your aquarium lights, the males will light up with intense metallic coloration, flash a glowing stripe down their foreheads, and perform a captivating “sparring dance” to impress the females.

Rainbowfish naturally love hard, alkaline water (pH 7.0 to 8.0) with plenty of dissolved minerals, which makes them a fantastic match for Bacolod’s natural tap water! To keep their colors at their absolute peak, provide a setup with a dark background, a strong filter current to simulate their native rivers, and a high-protein diet of premium slow-sinking micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and frozen bloodworms.

Drop by our Bacolod pet shop today to pick up premium color-enhancing nano feeds, high-output LED lighting, and a vibrant, healthy school of Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish!
