Quick Overview of the Elegant Anubias Angustifolia

Anubias Angustifolia (Anubias barteri var. angustifolia), natively discovered growing along the rocky, shaded riverbanks of West Africa (specifically Guinea, Liberia, and Cameroon), brings a highly sophisticated architectural texture to the aquarium. While most members of the Anubias family are famous for short, round, or heart-shaped foliage, this particular variety is celebrated for its striking lanceolate (spear-shaped) leaves.

Growing to a stately height of 4 to 6 inches, its narrow, leathery blades emerge from a thick, creeping horizontal rhizome. The leaves display a gorgeous, deeply saturated dark-emerald hue on top with a lighter green underside, often featuring gently undulating or wavy edges that move gracefully in the filter current. Because its leaves are incredibly tough and fibrous, it is completely safe from the nibbling tendencies of herbivorous fish like goldfish or larger cichlids.

Plant Profiles & Environmental Requirements

  • Care Level: Beginner (Equally as bulletproof as standard Nana, making it excellent for all skill levels)

  • Growth Rate: Slow (Highly stable, allowing you to maintain your exact aquascape design without constant trimming)

  • Lighting: Low to Moderate (Thrives effortlessly in shaded or low-tech setups; high-intensity light can promote unwanted algae growth on its slow leaves)

  • Water Temperature: 20°C to 28°C (Perfectly adapted to handle our tropical Bacolod climate with ease)

  • Placement: Midground to Background (Adds fantastic vertical accent lines when anchored to tall rocks or driftwood)

Local Care Tips for Your Spear-Leaved Epiphyte

Bacolod Planting and Husbandry Warning: Just like its round-leaved cousins, the single most important rule for keeping your Anubias Angustifolia alive is to never bury its thick, horizontal green rhizome into your sand, gravel, or aquasoil! > If the main creeping stem is completely covered and deprived of fresh water flow, it will suffocate, rot away, and cause the entire plant to melt within a matter of weeks. Instead, attach it directly onto your aquarium hardscape. Simply use a tiny drop of cyanoacrylate gel (aquarium-safe super glue) or tie it down with dark sewing thread onto a piece of porous driftwood, driftwood roots, or lava stone. Over time, its robust white anchor roots will tightly clasp onto the hardscape surfaces.

Because this elegant variety grows slightly taller than standard Anubias nana, it makes a magnificent midground transition plant. To keep its elongated leaves looking perfectly clean, dark, and glossy, position it underneath the natural shade of taller stem plants or floating plants.

Introducing a dedicated cleanup crew—such as Australian Amano Shrimp, Nerite Snails, or Otocinclus catfish—is a wonderful way to prevent green spot algae from forming on the leaves. It feeds directly from the water column, meaning a simple weekly dose of high-quality liquid micro-nutrients is more than enough to maintain its striking, spear-like crown.
