Quick Overview Introduced to the hobby by the legendary aquascaper Takashi Amano, the Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata) is the undisputed champion of freshwater algae control. Noticeably larger and more robust than typical Cherry Shrimp, they feature translucent bodies dotted with striking reddish-brown and green spots. They are famously relentless when it comes to devouring stubborn growth—including hair algae and even some stages of black beard algae (BBA)—making them an essential, hard-working addition for anyone trying to maintain a pristine, competition-level aquascape.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Beginner (Incredibly hardy once acclimated)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons (They grow larger than Neocaridina and need space to forage)

  • Water Temperature: 22°C to 28°C

  • Temperament: Peaceful (Excellent with nano fish, Tetras, and Corydoras; avoid keeping them with large Cichlids or Goldfish that may view them as a snack)

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Amano Shrimp are notorious escape artists! If your water parameters fluctuate or they are startled, they will easily climb out of an open-top aquarium. We highly recommend using a tight-fitting lid or mesh net for their tank. Also, note that while they may carry eggs, their larvae absolutely require brackish (salty) water to survive, meaning they will not overpopulate your freshwater setup. Drop by our shop to check out our tank lids, mineral-rich shrimp pellets for when their algae supply runs low, and healthy, locally acclimated Amano Shrimp!
