Quick Overview The Signifer Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil signifer), native to the coastal streams and estuaries of Eastern Australia, is a spectacular representative of the dwarf blue-eye family. They are celebrated for their highly animated personalities and unique anatomy. While females remain modestly colored, mature males develop dramatic, elongated dorsal and anal fins that look like tiny sails or wings. When courting females or displaying to rival males, they flash these fins upward and hop through the water column in a hypnotic dance. Combined with their piercing, glowing blue eyes and yellow-tinted tails, they bring incomparable movement to the upper half of the tank.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Beginner to Intermediate (Highly adaptable once fully acclimated)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 15 Gallons (Because they are exceptionally fast, active, and playful swimmers, they require horizontal swimming space; must be kept in schools of 6 or more)

  • Water Temperature: 20°C to 26°C (Appreciates good oxygenation in warmer weather)

  • Temperament: Peaceful but highly energetic (Excellent for community tanks with active tetras, rasboras, and bottom-dwelling Corydoras; keep a ratio of 1 male to 2-3 females to avoid over-stressing them)

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: In nature, Signifer Rainbowfish are often found in tidal creeks and mangrove estuaries, meaning they are incredibly adaptable to a wide range of water parameters. They thrive beautifully in hard, alkaline water, which makes them an outstanding match for much of our local tap water here in Bacolod!

Because they are hyper-active surface and midwater dwellers, they have a fast metabolism and need to be fed high-quality, easily accessible floating micro-pellets or crushed flakes multiple times a day. They are also proficient jumpers when excited or displaying, so a tight-fitting lid or mesh top is highly recommended to keep them safe.

Drop by our Bacolod pet shop today to pick up premium high-protein nano feeds, water quality test kits, and a lively, beautiful school of Signifer Rainbowfish!
