Quick Overview The Redline Torpedo Barb (Sahyadria denisonii), native to the fast-flowing, highly oxygenated hill streams of the Western Ghats in India, is an elite favorite among modern aquascapers. True to their name, they feature a highly aerodynamic, torpedo-shaped body designed for effortless high-speed cruising. They are visually stunning: a pitch-black line runs horizontally along their silver-green scales, topped by a brilliant, glowing neon-red stripe that stretches proudly from their snout through the eye. As adults, they reach an impressive size of 4 to 6 inches and develop a gorgeous metallic green sheen on their heads.
Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips
-
Care Level: Intermediate (Requires excellent filtration, strong water flow, and strict temperature management)
-
Minimum Tank Size: 55 Gallons (Because they are large, powerful, horizontal endurance swimmers, they strictly require a long tank format—at least 4 feet—and must be kept in schools of 6 or more)
-
Water Parameters: pH 6.5 to 7.8, moderate water hardness
-
Temperament: Peaceful but highly energetic (Excellent for large community tanks; pair them with other fast-swimming tank mates like larger Danios, Rainbowfish, and robust Tetras).
Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: In their native mountain rivers, Torpedo Barbs enjoy sub-tropical, highly oxygenated, cool water (ideal sweet spot is 22°C to 24°C). Because our local Bacolod weather gets quite hot during the dry season, leaving them in a stagnant, warm tank can cause their brilliant colors to instantly fade and drastically reduce their lifespan.
To keep them vibrant and healthy like a pro, place your tank in the coolest, most well-ventilated room of your house. Equip your aquarium with a heavy-duty canister filter paired with an extra wavemaker or powerhead to simulate a fast-moving river current. High water movement increases critical oxygen saturation. Using an aquarium cooling fan to blow across the water’s surface can easily lower temperatures to keep your barbs perfectly comfortable!
Also, because they are powerful sprinters that can easily startle at night, a tight-fitting, secure aquarium lid is 100% mandatory to prevent them from jumping out. They are unpicky omnivores that love high-quality community pellets, color-enhancing flakes, and frozen bloodworms.
