Quick Overview of the Majestic Siamese Fighting Fish

The Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens), native to the shallow, warm rice paddies and slow-moving river basins of Thailand (formerly Siam), is one of the most recognizable and beloved aquatic pets on earth. Reaching a compact adult size of 2.5 to 3 inches, these labyrinth fish have been selectively bred over generations to display an unbelievable array of tail types—including massive, veil-like Halfmoons, spiked Crowntails, and sleek, aggressive short-finned Plakats. Their color palette spans the entire spectrum, featuring iridescent blues, fiery reds, solid pastels, and intricate multi-colored “Koi” patterns.

Tank Requirements for Your Siamese Fighting Fish Setup

  • Care Level: Beginner (Exceedingly hardy and highly adaptable, making them perfect first pets)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 5 Gallons (While they are incredibly resilient, upgrading them from a small bowl to a true nano tank drastically improves their color and lifespan)

  • Water Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (Perfectly acclimated to our warm tropical Bacolod climate)

  • Temperament: Solitary & Territorial (Males are highly aggressive toward other males and must be housed alone; however, they are entirely peaceful toward slow, short-finned community tank mates like Corydoras)

Local Care Tips for Your Premium Betta

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: There is a widespread myth that the Siamese Fighting Fish prefers living in microscopic, stagnant plastic bowls or flower vases. In reality, keeping them in tiny volumes of un-filtered water causes rapid ammonia buildup, which burns their delicate fins and causes them to lose their vibrant colors.

To see your Betta truly thrive, house them in at least a 5-gallon aquarium equipped with a low-flow sponge filter. Because they possess a specialized labyrinth organ that allows them to gulp atmospheric air from the water’s surface, strong, turbulent water currents will quickly exhaust them. Low-flow filtration keeps them relaxed and active.

For decoration, avoid sharp plastic plants that can easily shred their flowing, silk-like fins. Instead, choose smooth river stones, driftwood, or soft live plants like Anubias and Java Fern.

Bettas are strict carnivores with highly expressive, intelligent personalities. They will quickly learn to recognize you and swim to the glass to beg for food! Feed them a high-quality diet of specialized floating Betta pellets, freeze-dried daphnia, and frozen bloodworms to maintain their intense pigmentation.
