Quick Overview of the Regal Emperor Palmeri Tetra

The Emperor Palmeri Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri), native to the shaded, slow-moving river basins of the San Juan and Atrato rivers in Colombia, brings an undeniable look of royalty to the aquarium. Reaching a mature size of about 1.5 to 2 inches, this species breaks away from standard, plain tetra shapes. They possess a deep-bodied, elegant profile highlighted by a thick, midnight-black stripe running from the snout straight through to the tail fin.

Above this stripe lies a stunning layer of hyper-reflective scales that shimmer with a brilliant electric purple, violet, and sky-blue iridescence under proper lighting. True to their royal status, mature males grow elongated dorsal fins and a spectacular “three-pronged” trident tail fin, featuring a dramatically extended black central lobe. Furthermore, males display striking, piercing blue eyes, while females possess vibrant green eyes, making them incredibly unique to look at.

Tank Requirements for Your Emperor Palmeri Tetra Setup

  • Care Level: Beginner (Exceptionally hardy, adaptable, and a perfect choice for newcomers and veterans alike)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 15 to 20 Gallons (While they are peaceful, males like to establish loose, playful territories, so providing a longer tank format with a school of 6 or more is highly recommended)

  • Water Temperature: 23°C to 27°C (Thrives smoothly and comfortably in our local tropical Bacolod climate)

  • Temperament: Extremely Peaceful (An outstanding community resident that pairs beautifully with Rasboras, Corydoras, Apistogramma dwarf cichlids, Gouramis, and Neocaridina dwarf shrimp)

Local Care Tips for Your Royal Tetra School

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Unlike many other tetra species that panic and school tightly out of fear, Emperor Palmeri Tetra males are bold and proud. They love to stake out small territories among live plants, where they will playfully “spar” with rival males by flaring their magnificent fins and displaying their deep violet colors—without ever causing actual harm to one another.

To encourage this captivating behavioral display and prevent your fish from looking washed out, design your aquascape with a pitch-black background, a dark substrate like black sand or aquasoil, and plenty of dense, leafy live plants (such as Amazon Swords or Java Ferns). The deep green backdrop combined with a dark environment will make their metallic purple sheen completely pop!

They are highly opportunistic, enthusiastic feeders that are not picky at all. They will eagerly accept high-quality tropical flakes, slow-sinking micro-pellets, freeze-dried daphnia, and frozen bloodworms.

Drop by our Bacolod pet shop today to pick up dark aquasoils, premium color-enhancing micro-diets, lush live plants, and a breathtaking, healthy school of Emperor Palmeri Tetras!
