Quick Overview of the Albino Common Dragonfin

The Albino Common Dragonfin (Polypterus senegalus var.) is a breathtaking, naturally occurring color morph of the legendary Senegal Bichir. Reaching similar adult sizes as the standard form—typically 10 to 14 inches—this albino variant is defined by its smooth, luminous, porcelain-colored skin and delicate, translucent fins. Much like the specimen shown in image_e859a7.jpg (but in its radiant albino form), this fish possesses the same primitive, armored body structure and fascinating, snake-like movement. They are long-lived, intelligent, and highly personable, often recognizing their owners during feeding time.

Local Care Tips for Albino Common Dragonfin in Bacolod

Bacolod Aquascaper’s Advisory: Because this albino variant lacks dark pigmentation, it is more prone to stress if the aquarium lighting is too bright. We highly recommend using a “shaded” aquascape design: incorporate large pieces of driftwood, rock caves, or tall-growing plants like Valisneria to create areas of refuge where your fish can rest away from the light.

As with the standard Dragonfin, you must ensure your tank has a very secure, heavy-duty lid. These fish are surprisingly strong and will attempt to jump if they feel exposed or threatened. In our warm Bacolod climate, maintain a strict water change schedule to keep nitrate levels low, as this will prevent skin issues and keep their albino coloration looking crisp and bright. For feeding, use long feeding tongs to offer high-protein, meaty items like frozen silversides, shrimp, or high-quality sinking carnivore pellets. They are fascinating to watch and, with proper care, will be a standout, long-term companion in your aquarium!
