Quick Overview of the Garra Rufa

The Garra Rufa (Garra rufa), natively found in the river basins of the Middle East, is a unique freshwater species that has earned global fame as the “Doctor Fish.” Beyond their commercial spa utility, they are highly prized by modern aquascapers as an elite, non-stop cleaning force. Sporting a sleek, torpedo-shaped, mottled olive-grey body with a specialized underslung mouth, they spend their days hovering over surfaces, raspy-licking away stubborn organic matter. Adult specimens typically reach around 4 to 5 inches (10 to 12 cm). They are incredibly social, endlessly entertaining to watch, and possess an energetic curiosity that makes them interact peacefully with both their owners and tankmates.

Tank/Plant Profiles & Environmental Requirements

  • Care Level: Very Easy / Highly Resilient

  • Temperature: 20°C – 28°C

  • Tank Placement: Bottom Dwellers, Glass and Hardscape Climbers

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons (Thrives best when kept in groups of 4 or more to balance social hierarchy)

Local Care Tips for Bacolod Aquarists

Bacolod Water Conditions & Oxygenation: Garra Rufa are perfectly suited for Bacolod tap water. They prefer neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water, meaning you can skip the complex water-softening steps required by delicate tetras. However, because their native habitats are fast-moving rivers, they require highly oxygenated water. Ensure your filtration system provides excellent surface agitation. During warm tropical summers in Negros, oxygen levels in the water drop naturally; employing an aquarium cooling fan or an auxiliary air stone is highly recommended to keep the water rich in dissolved oxygen.

Aquascaping Security & Hardscape Layout: Garra Rufa are remarkably strong, agile swimmers that use their modified mouthparts to suction onto and climb slick surfaces. A securely sealed tank lid or tight-fitting mesh cover is 100% mandatory, as they can easily climb up filter intake tubes or corner seams and jump out. Design your aquascape with plenty of heavy hardscape, such as Seiryu stones, smooth river rocks, and driftwood. They will meticulously clean the surface of epiphytes like Anubias or Bucephalandra without chewing on the leaves, and they will not disrupt fragile rooting carpets like Monte Carlo.

Dietary Supplementation: While they are phenomenal at scouring your tank for hair algae, green dust algae, and organic biofilm, they cannot thrive on natural aquarium waste alone. To maintain their long-term health and vigor, supplement their grazing with high-quality sinking spirulina wafers, community pellets, and occasional treats of frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp. They are incredibly peaceful and make fantastic tankmates for everything from fancy shrimp to active schooling community fish.
