While it shares a similar name and color palette with its dwarf South American counterpart, the Asian species is a much more robust, confident, and substantial fish. Reaching an adult size of 5 to 6 inches in captivity, they develop a beautiful, stocky frame decorated with thick, irregular vertical bands of deep velvet-black and honey-gold. They are incredibly hardy, highly disease-resistant, and possess a powerful feeding response that makes them an absolute joy to watch under dim lighting.

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: The single most important rule when keeping the Asian Bumblebee Catfish is selecting the right size of tank mates. They are completely unaggressive and will not pick fights with other fish, but they are opportunistic predators with highly elastic mouths.
Never house them with nano fish like Neon Tetras, Guppies, Rasboras, or tiny Dwarf Shrimp—once the lights go out, the catfish will eagerly swallow them whole. Instead, house them with robust, active mid-to-upper water fish that can easily hold their own, such as Silver Dollars, Tiger Barbs, larger Gouramis, Bala Sharks, and robust Cichlids.
Because they are nocturnal, they spend daylight hours hiding out. Provide them with plenty of cover using smooth rock structures, terracotta tubes, and large driftwood roots.
