Quick Overview

The Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus) is an absolute jewel of the nano aquarium world. Native to the slow-moving streams and swamps of West Africa, these tiny fish grow to just 1.2 to 1.5 inches in length. They are instantly recognizable by their alternating vertical bars of cream and dark brown, coupled with bright metallic blue accents on their eyes. Mature males develop a jaw-dropping caudal fin that looks exactly like a rocket flame, featuring brilliant horizontal stripes of red, blue, and yellow. As dedicated surface dwellers, they bring a completely unique dynamic to the upper levels of specialized micro-aquascapes.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Intermediate (They appreciate stable water parameters and gentle conditions)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 5 to 10 Gallons (Best kept in small groups of 6 or more; aim for a ratio of 1 male to 2 or 3 females)

  • Water Temperature: 22°C to 26°C (Prefers the cooler side of tropical temperatures)

  • Temperament: Peaceful but timid (Excellent for nano community tanks with Dwarf Shrimp, Chili Rasboras, and Pygmy Corydoras)

  • Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Clown Killifish have two distinct habits you need to prepare for: they are elite jumpers and strict surface micro-predators. For your setup here in Bacolod, a completely tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is mandatory, as they can fly through the smallest gaps. They also prefer calm water with zero surface agitation—a gentle air-powered sponge filter is ideal. Because their mouths point upward to catch food floating on the surface, they will easily ignore food that sinks. Drop by our shop to grab premium floating micro-pellets, freeze-dried daphnia, floating plants (like Dwarf Water Lettuce) for surface shade, and a beautiful group of healthy Clown Killies!
