Quick Overview of the White Sock Sulawesi Shrimp
The White Sock Sulawesi Shrimp, often categorized alongside the Cardinal Shrimp (Caridina dennerli) or sometimes referred to as the Red Orchid/White Banded Sulawesi Shrimp, is an exotic dwarf invertebrate native to the ancient, warm-water rift lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia (primarily the Malili lake system). Reaching a tiny adult size of 0.5 to 0.8 inches (1.5 to 2 cm), this species is renowned for its intense, opaque crimson-to-blood-red coloration. It lacks the starry white body spots of the classic Cardinal Shrimp; instead, its defining feature is the distinct, stark white bands covering its front appendages (chelipeds), giving the appearance of wearing white gloves or socks. Watching their bright white “socks” rapidly dance and tap across dark rockwork as they harvest microscopic biofilm is a mesmerizing sight.
Tank/Plant Profiles & Environmental Requirements

-
Tank Placement: Hardscape & Rockwork Glider
-
Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons (Larger water volume is highly recommended to maintain strict parameter stability)
Local Care Tips for Bacolod Aquarists
Bacolod Water Adjustments & Sulawesi Mineral Needs: Like all Sulawesi shrimp, the White Sock is notoriously sensitive to water changes and parameter swings. While Bacolod’s tap water is naturally neutral-to-slightly-hard, Sulawesi Shrimp require strict, warm alkaline conditions (pH 7.8 to 8.5). To achieve this safely, you must either buffer your local tap water using a crushed coral/aragonite substrate, or ideally, use pure RO (Reverse Osmosis) water remineralized with specialized Sulawesi mineral salts (like Sulawesi 8.5). Always use a high-grade dechlorinator if using tap water, and ensure your tank is fully matured (running for several months) with thick algae growth before adding them.
Warm Water Aquascaping & The Epiphyte Rule: Bacolod’s naturally warm, tropical room temperatures are absolutely perfect for these shrimp, often eliminating the need for a heater! To mimic their natural lake habitat, design an aquascape heavy with porous Black Lava Rock, which provides massive surface area for the biofilm they eat and creates a dark backdrop that makes their red bodies and white socks pop. Because they need high pH, avoid buffering aqua-soils. For a splash of green, frame your rocks with hardy epiphytes like Anubias Nano, Java Ferns, or Bucephalandra—just ensure the creeping rhizomes of these epiphytes remain completely exposed above the substrate to keep them from rotting!
Micro-Diet & Strict Species-Only Housing: White Sock Sulawesi Shrimp have tiny mouths and feed almost exclusively on naturally occurring algae and biofilm. Supplement their diet sparingly with high-quality powdered shrimp foods, spirulina dust, or specialized bacter-supplements. Because they are incredibly timid, tiny, and easily stressed, they must be kept in a species-only tank. The only highly recommended tankmates are peaceful Sulawesi Rabbit Snails (Tylomelania sp.), which share their exact water requirements and help cultivate the biofilm the shrimp need. Never house them with fish, as even the smallest nano-fish will outcompete them for food and force them into hiding.
