Quick Overview
The Brillianthead Rummynose Tetra (Hemigrammus bleheri var. “Brilliant”), also known as the Diamond Head Rummynose, elevates a hobby classic to a whole new level. While traditional Rummynoses have a simple matte-silvery body, this premium variety is selectively bred to showcase an incredible, mirror-like metallic luster along its back and head that sparkles beautifully under aquarium lights. They retain everything hobbyists love about the true Hemigrammus bleheri: a deep, intense red face that bleeds past the gill plates and an elegantly patterned zebra-striped tail fin.
Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips
-
Care Level: Intermediate (Requires an established, fully cycled aquarium)
-
Minimum Tank Size: 20 Gallons (Because they are exceptionally fast, high-energy horizontal swimmers that must be kept in schools of 6 to 10 minimum to prevent stress)
-
Water Temperature: 23°C to 28°C (Thrives excellently in our local tropical climate, and can even be housed alongside warm-water fish like Discus)
-
Temperament: Peaceful and Social (An absolute dream for community aquariums; safe with other tetras, Corydoras, and adult dwarf shrimp)
Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Rummynose Tetras are famous for being the ultimate “living water quality testers.” If your tank parameters are perfect and the water is clean, their faces will glow a vibrant, fiery crimson. However, if they are stressed, or if ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels spike in our warm Bacolod weather, their red faces will instantly fade to a pale pink or turn completely white. This gives you an immediate visual warning to check your filtration!
To keep their diamond scales shimmering and their heads deep red, provide a well-planted setup with a dark aquasoil substrate and driftwood roots. They have small mouths but fast metabolisms, so feed them high-quality floating micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and frozen baby brine shrimp. They are also energetic jumpers when startled, so a secure lid is highly recommended!
