Quick Overview

The Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius doriae), native to the mangrove swamps, estuaries, and sluggish rivers of Southeast Asia, is one of the most uniquely recognizable miniature fish in the aquarium world. True to their name, they look exactly like aquatic bumblebees, sporting a compact, chunky 1.5-inch profile wrapped in thick, vertical bands of vibrant golden-yellow and jet-black. These highly entertaining fish spend their time balancing on their pelvic fins, hopping across the substrate, or perching comically on rocks, driftwood, and plant leaves like little underwater sentries.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Intermediate (Requires specific water parameter attention and a specialized live/frozen food diet)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons (Can easily be kept in small groups; a 10-gallon tank is perfect for a colony of 4 to 6 gobies)

  • Water Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (Perfectly matched to our local tropical Bacolod climate)

  • Temperament: Peaceful but territorial (Gentle toward other mid-to-upper water fish, but they will squabble playfully amongst themselves for the best hiding spots)

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Success with the Bumblebee Goby boils down to two critical secrets: water chemistry and diet!

While they are often sold as pure freshwater fish, Brachygobius doriae naturally originates from tidal areas. They strictly require hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5 to 8.5) to survive long-term. They thrive exceptionally well in a brackish water setup using high-quality marine salt to achieve a low specific gravity of around 1.002 to 1.005. Adding crushed coral or aragonite sand to your tank layout will provide the perfect mineral buffer!

Secondly, Bumblebee Gobies are strict carnivores that almost always refuse dry flakes or standard processed pellets. To keep them fat and healthy, you must feed them frozen or live foods, such as frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, or live daphnia.

Because they are small and territorial, provide plenty of caves, small terracotta pots, and dense decorations so each goby can claim its own little “honeycomb” territory. Drop by our Bacolod pet shop today to pick up premium frozen fish foods, marine salt buffers, and a charming, healthy colony of Bumblebee Gobies!
