Quick Overview The Glass Bloodfin Tetra (Prionobrama filigera), native to the warm river basins of South America, is a fascinating and highly durable addition to the freshwater hobby. They get their name from their glass-like, translucent bodies that allow you to see their internal skeletal structure, which transitions sharply into an intensely bright, blood-red caudal fin. Because they are exceptionally hardy and highly active, they spend their days schooling tightly together in the upper and middle sections of the water column, providing fantastic movement and a very unique visual dynamic to your setup.

Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips

  • Care Level: Beginner (Extremely resilient and forgiving of minor water parameter shifts)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 15 to 20 Gallons (As active, fast-paced horizontal swimmers, they thrive best in a “long” tank format; must be kept in schools of 6 or more)

  • Water Temperature: 22°C to 28°C (Perfectly adapted to standard tropical conditions)

  • Temperament: Peaceful and highly energetic (Excellent for community tanks with other active tetras, rasboras, and bottom-dwellers like Corydoras)

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Because Glass Bloodfin Tetras have largely transparent bodies, they can look almost invisible in a bare tank with a light-colored background. To truly make their glassy silhouettes and fiery red tails stand out, house them in a well-planted aquarium with a dark background and dark substrate (like black sand or aquasoil).

They are also excellent jumpers when startled, so a secure, tight-fitting aquarium lid is highly recommended! Drop by our Bacolod pet shop today to pick up premium high-protein micro-flakes, dark aquasoils, and a beautiful, tight-schooling group of Glass Bloodfin Tetras.
