Quick Overview The Otocinclus (affectionately known in the hobby as the “Oto”) is a tiny, highly sought-after catfish native to the fast-flowing rivers of South America. Maxing out at barely 2 inches in length, they are the ultimate algae-eating alternative to large plecos because their small size and gentle nature mean they will never damage or uproot delicate aquatic plants. They are incredibly social and constantly busy, spending their days fluttering from leaf to leaf, gently grazing on soft green algae and biofilm.
Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips
-
Care Level: Intermediate (They require a fully mature, established aquarium)
-
Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons (Must be kept in schools of at least 6 to feel secure and prevent stress)
-
Water Temperature: 22°C to 26°C
-
Temperament: Extremely Peaceful (The absolute perfect tank mate for Dwarf Shrimp, Tetras, and nano Rasboras)
-
Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Otocinclus are notorious for having delicate stomachs and can easily starve in brand-new, overly clean setups. You must only add them to a mature, cycled tank that already has a steady growth of biofilm and soft green algae! To keep them plump and healthy here in Bacolod, we highly recommend supplementing their natural foraging with fresh, locally sourced blanched vegetables like cucumber (pipino) or zucchini, alongside specialized herbivore diets. Drop by our shop to pick up premium sinking algae wafers, real driftwood, and a healthy, locally acclimated school of Otos!
