Quick Overview The Espei Rasbora (Trigonostigma espei), native to the shaded, slow-moving jungle streams of Thailand and Cambodia, is an absolute favorite for premium aquascapes. While they closely resemble the popular Harlequin Rasbora, the Espei is slightly smaller, more slender, and boasts a much deeper, more intense neon copper-orange hue that truly radiates under aquarium lighting. They feature a black, triangular “lambchop” marking on the rear half of their bodies. Because they are exceptionally peaceful and naturally school tightly together, they provide brilliant contrast and dynamic movement against lush green plants.
Tank Requirements & Local Care Tips
-
Care Level: Beginner (Incredibly resilient and highly adaptable)
-
Minimum Tank Size: 10 to 15 Gallons (Must be kept in schools of 8 or more; the larger the school, the more confident they become and the tighter they will swim together)
-
Water Temperature: 23°C to 28°C (Perfectly suited for our tropical local climate)
-
Temperament: Peaceful (An excellent community fish that pairs beautifully with Tetras, Honey Gouramis, Corydoras, and Dwarf Shrimp)
-
Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Espei Rasboras naturally inhabit quiet waters shaded by heavy jungle overgrowth. In bright, open tanks, they can initially feel shy and look a bit washed out. To get that jaw-dropping, glowing metallic orange to fully pop, provide plenty of live plants like Cryptocorynes or Java Ferns, use dark aquasoil, and consider adding a few dried Talisay leaves to the water to mimic their native tannin-rich environment.
