Quick Overview
The Red Coral Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus), native to the warm freshwater systems of Central America, is one of the most reliable and popular choices in the aquarium hobby. This premium color variety is highly sought after for its uniform, saturated red-orange hue that beautifully reflects light. Growing to a compact 1.5 to 2 inches, these highly active fish are constantly on the move, exploring all levels of the water column. As livebearers, they are exceptionally easy to breed, making them a fascinating and educational choice for families and beginner hobbyists alike.

-
Minimum Tank Size: 10 to 15 Gallons (Thrives best when kept in small groups)
-

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: Platies naturally thrive in hard water with an alkaline pH (7.0 to 8.2), which perfectly aligns with much of the natural tap water found here in Bacolod!
If you intend to keep males and females together, always follow the 1 male to 2 or 3 females ratio. Male platies are famously persistent, and keeping a higher number of females ensures that mating harassment is distributed evenly, keeping your female fish stress-free and healthy.
Additionally, Platies are excellent at grazing on soft green algae and organic biofilm. Housed in a tank with live plants like Hornwort or Guppy Grass, they will happily help keep your tank clean while providing great cover for any newborn fry!
