Quick Overview of the Cheerleading Freshwater Pom Pom Crab

The Freshwater Pom Pom Crab (Ptychognathus barbatus), native to the coastal streams and river mouths of Southeast Asia, is taking the nano-aquarium hobby by storm. Growing to a tiny maximum adult size of just 1 inch, these highly social dwarf crabs are completely harmless to your aquarium plants and fish.

Their most famous feature is the dense, fuzzy patches of hair (called setae) covering their front claws, giving them the appearance of an aquatic cheerleader waving miniature pom-poms. These “pom-poms” are actually incredible biological tools; the crab rhythmically waves them through the water column to trap microscopic food particles, plankton, and delicious biofilm to eat!

Tank Requirements for Your Freshwater Pom Pom Crab Setup

  • Care Level: Beginner to Intermediate (Easy to feed, but requires clean, stable water chemistry)

  • Minimum Tank Size: 5 Gallons (An outstanding candidate for high-end desktop nano setups)

  • Water Temperature: 22°C to 28°C (Perfect for our tropical Bacolod climate, requiring no heaters indoors)

  • Temperament: Highly Peaceful (Safe to house with small nano fish like Neon Tetras, Celestial Pearl Danios, Pygmy Corydoras, and most peaceful snails)

Local Care Tips for Your Aquatic Nano Crab

Bacolod Hobbyist Tip: While most aquarium crabs are “semi-aquatic” and require a land area to prevent drowning, the Freshwater Pom Pom Crab is a truly fully aquatic species that spends its entire life happily submerged!

However, they are legendary, highly skilled escape artists. If there is an open gap around your filter intake pipe or light cords, they will easily climb out. A 100% tight-fitting aquarium lid or mesh cover is absolutely mandatory to keep them safe inside.

Because they love to burrow and sift, always provide a soft, smooth substrate like fine black sand or cosmetic silica sand. Throw in a few pieces of hollow driftwood, smooth stones, or a dense bed of Java Moss to give them plenty of cozy crevices to hide in, which is especially vital when they are soft and vulnerable right after a molt.

While they love filter-feeding, they are eager omnivorous scavengers. They will happily march out after dark to eat sinking shrimp pellets, algae wafers, crushed fish flakes, and occasional treats of frozen bloodworms. Adding a small fragment of cuttlebone to the tank provides essential calcium to help them build thick, healthy new shells!
